feel like they use filesystem extended attributes here just so that they don't have to bother parsing/emitting whatever specific metadata format for each of the different types of files they support; they just stick their metadata in the filesystem outside the file

![Luminance/chrominance systems in general[edit]
The primary advantage of luma/chroma systems such as Y′UV, and its relatives Y′IQ and YDbDr, is that they remain compatible with black and white analog television (largely due to the work of Georges Valensi). The Y′ channel saves all the data recorded by black and white cameras, so it produces a signal suitable for reception on old monochrome displays. In this case, the U and V are simply discarded. Images in every programming language feel like how people joke about strings in Rust, where there are 800 different types of image that represent different kinds of views and ownership statuses and compression and memory layout (and you get different types of image from network / file / GPU / screen / 2D draw calls and are constantly converting between them to get stuff done)
