insiders & outsiders

i was more struck by being on campus, which was totally empty

something you realize when you come back to campus -- that you forget when you're a student there - - is that there are insiders who belong on campus (students, faculty) and outsiders, and when you're an outsider you don't really mean anything or have any status, you're not really supposed to be anywhere

and it's hard for an insider to perceive this line even though it's very real (and this line alienates anyone who's an outsider from contributing much since it's ultimately futile)

i think Dynamicland is similar

there's a big difference between having the absolute right to be somewhere vs. being there on someone's sufferance, and it's hard to really have a community (& get deep investment from them into making stuff) if everyone feels that they're there on whim of the core lab members

@andy_matuschak @omar this is a really good insight and something very relatable. I didn’t feel like I “belonged” until Bret gave me a “library card” and a key. Even then I still felt … apart.
