The C10M problem

It's time for servers to handle 10 million simultaneous connections, don't you think? After all, computers now
have 1000 times the memory as 15 years ago when the first started handling 10 thousand connections.

Today (2013), $1200 will buy you a computer with 8 cores, 64 gigabytes of RAM, 10-gbps Ethernet, and a
solid state drive. Such systems should be able to handle:

- 10 million concurrent connections

- 10 gigabits/second

- 10 million packets/second

- 10 microsecond latency

- 10 microsecond jitter

- 1 million connections/second

Such systems already exist. We call them "hardware" or "devices". But in recent years, devices have become
just software running on general purpose computers. Rip open a network device and you might find a personal
computer inside. The limits of scalability aren't our hardware, but the software, specifically, the operating
system.

woah -- it's like it's an intermingling of levels of abstraction (the world of display and pixels vs. the world of characters and text)

Function: pixel-fill-region start end pixel-width ¶
Most Emacs buffers use monospaced text, so all the filling functions (like fill-region) work based on the number of characters and char-width. However, Emacs can render other types of things, like text that contains images and using proportional fonts, and the pixel-fill-region exists to handle that. It fills the region of text between start and end at pixel granularity, so text using variable-pitch fonts or several different fonts looks filled regardless of different character sizes. The argument pixel-width specifies the maximum pixel width a line is allowed to have after filling; it is the pixel-resolution equivalent of the fill-column in fill-region. For instance, this Lisp snippet will insert text using a proportional font, and then fill this to be no wider than 300 pixels:

This method is probably more accurate (and I think provides a half-closed range, unlike MathUtils), but it's also about 40x slower (median ~190ns on my 15" MBP, vs. ~4.9ns using MathUtils), which may be more important for some applications. –

it's often very tempting to add some capability to a
system that also breaks some symmetry or assumption or
monism, and so loses far more than the capability adds.
solo authors are less susceptible to the temptation;
companies are much more susceptible
