There is only one 100% foolproof way:

public static double normalizeAngle(double angle) {
return Math.atan2(Math.sin(angle), Math.cos(angle));
}
Everything else is people trying to be too smart and failing.

This method is probably more accurate (and I think provides a half-closed range, unlike MathUtils), but it's also about 40x slower (median ~190ns on my 15" MBP, vs. ~4.9ns using MathUtils), which may be more important for some applications. –

@spiralganglion i guess it would actually be a good proper datatype with overloaded operators and all -- angle type that can be compared, added, subtracted, printed as degrees or radians, etc

@omar @spiralganglion yep I have one of those going. You still get into representation and canonicalization questions. Eg 720 degrees the same as 360 the same as 0, or not? What about numerical stability, do you care if you end up at 90.00001 degrees sometimes when you expected to be at 90?

@avi @omar Yes! One of those rep/canon questions I care about: the direction of an angle (treating it as a ray), versus the axis it lies along (treating it as an infinite line, so 180º = 0º).
