Introduction
In this paper, I conduct a cognitive analysis of the Acme text editor, which was developed as part of the Plan 9 operating system at Bell Labs. In par- ticular, I focus on new users and how they interact with Acme’s unique windowing system. I evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of this windowing system, which features tiled (non-overlapping) windows and direct mouse manipulation of windows.
The Acme text editor is unique among programming tools because of its focus on the mouse. The mouse is used to perform almost all operations in Acme, except for actual text entry. Historically, mouse-oriented interfaces have been designed for general users, but not for programmers, as Rob Pike (an author of Acme) notes.1
