set up DokuWiki for Folk website a while back -- I'm very drawn to these cheap commodity PHP hosting things where you get cPanel and PHP and MySQL and can just install DokuWiki/MediaWiki/phpBB/WordPress/whatever.
(the main problem is figuring out which host to use, there are so many at places like LowEndTalk, at $10-30/year, and I think you should just arbitrarily pick one)
- I like that I'm not dependent on some application-level service that puts their own ads up and that I can't migrate away from like GitHub or Wikia or Twitter
- I like that PHP systems mostly generate plain HTML pages instead of trying to be a single-page app with a ton of JavaScript (or even doing much AJAX stuff)
- I like that I also don't have to maintain my own Linux system / Web server process, because it's _shared_ hosting
@omar have you heard of nearly free speech? https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net If their setup works for your needs, it’s really nice that the hosting is basically free when there’s not much traffic. I’ve been using them for a decade or more for simple sites without issues
