maybe you get more 'points' from the compiler if the value is observable in an _ambient_ way, where you can sense something going wrong in your program without having to explicitly inspect anything

programming language that requires that you provide evidence that each value in your program is observable from the outside of your program somehow (printed out, drawn to the screen, logged, etc) or you get a compile error
