Notice that what is relevant is the exact path string passed to dlopen. So if you use "./foo.so" and "././foo.so" (or "../foosymlink.so" where foosymlink.so is a symlink to foo.so) the dlopen-ed handles are different, and in some cases weird behavior of the two instances of that shared library might happen.

I think I have run into 2+ different issues where the Linux sampling profiler `perf` literally does not work out of the box and I have to clone the kernel source code and compile it myself

i feel like packages just don't work a lot of the time when I try them and I end up having to unzip and compile them myself & even patch the source code, so it's very annoying when there's too steep a slope between 'install package' and 'hack on package'

They're inter-related and not a simple generational series of changes. But one pattern seems to have persisted pretty strongly: nothing works very well with "real world" production userspace deployments initially, yet earlier generations of tools tend to be abandoned. If you go to use one tool you're told it's obsolete, you should use the new one instead, but that one doesn't actually work on any of the systems widely deployed in production and won't for a long time yet. When it does, it probably doesn't support external debuginfo (like every system has had for 10+ years) for another year or two after that, because really, who debugs packaged binaries on production systems?"

finally learning about `perf probe` -- https://bristot.me/using-perf-probe-to-measure-execution-time-of-user-space-code-on-linux/ -- think I want to add a hook to scripting language so I can inject probes at script level. might just JIT & call a stub C function with unique name and then probe that

trying to hold to the old rule that when you're writing a script, you use the long-form versions of command-line arguments (`--pid` instead of `p`, etc) because documentation and future readability is more important than convenience of typing

I think that this feeling of exploration requires that you have 'limbs'/'actuators' that you control and use to interact with the space, that you're continually moving around and making active choices to inspect & poke at things, and "feed" interfaces are antithetical to that sort of engagement https://mastodon.social/@rjkwon/112299691696820710
