you fake geometry by manipulating the renderer

it reminds me a little of vector vs bitmap
that is, the problem with vector graphics is that it has these invisible seams, there are many vector images that produce the same displayed image
so you can get images that are pathological or inefficient or in weird states, and it's not obvious what operations do or why they don't work
that seems to generalize to 3d geometries and maybe generally sparse representations of things
